Shifting the Moment: How Music Brings Calm, Joy, and Connection to Caregiving

The Power of Music in Caregiving
Music can be such a simple but incredibly powerful tool in caregiving. Playing familiar, nostalgic, or calming songs can help:
Ease agitation and anxiety in a loved one.
Improve overall mood and stimulate positive memories.
Create a relaxed, predictable environment.
Even just having soft music playing in the background can shift the energy of a room. It can make otherwise stressful transition moments feel a little lighter, more peaceful, or even more joyful. Whether you are singing along together, swaying to the rhythm, or just sitting quietly and listening, music brings a deep sense of connection without needing many words.
A Personal Note: Filling the Quiet
This is something I’ve really noticed in my own life, too. Living alone this year, I’ve realized how much music helps me deal with the quiet and avoid feeling lonely.
I find myself constantly playing something—blasting it while cooking dinner, keeping it soft and instrumental while doing homework, or just having it in the background while I move around the house. I also try not to be on my phone when I eat, so I always have calm music playing during meals, which makes that time feel much more peaceful and intentional.
Recently, I found some great calming focus music on YouTube, and it has truly helped me stay present and productive. Music has become such an incredible outlet for me because there are so many different genres to choose from depending on exactly what you need in the moment. It can make you feel empowered, focused, happy, connected, or just content.
🎵 Somewhere to Start: A Quick Playlist
One of my absolute favorite artists is Leon Bridges. His music gives a perfect mix of calm and joy, but also brings energy right when you need it.
If you’re looking for a few songs to start your caregiving soundtrack this week, I highly recommend checking these out:
🌻 "Texas Sun" (for a breezy, calming afternoon vibe)
✨ "Mariella" (my favorite song ever!)
💃 "Twistin’ & Groovin’" (perfect for a little kitchen dance moment!)
🎶 "Ain’t Got Nothing On You" (warm, smooth, and soul-stirring)
Your Challenge This Week
This week, try making a custom playlist or putting on some songs for yourself or your loved one. Pick the songs that bring out the exact feelings you want to invite more of into your home.
Music can meet you wherever you are, and sometimes, it is the easiest way to shift the mood of the entire day.
Have a nice week!
