Exploring the Work of Dr. Jennifer Bute

This week, I was looking into the work of Dr. Jennifer Bute and her beautiful approach to living well with dementia.

One thing that really stood out to me is her perspective that well-being is not just one single thing—it is a mosaic made up of many different parts:

  • Staying active 🏃‍♀️

  • Finding joy ☀️

  • Feeling calm 🍃

  • Maintaining identity 🎨

  • Staying connected to others 💬

As caregivers, it can be incredibly easy to get swept up in the endless lists of daily tasks, medications, routines, and safety concerns. But Dr. Bute's work is a gentle reminder that your loved one is still a whole person with deep emotional, social, and personal needs.

Small Moments, Big Impact

Helping a loved one live well doesn't require grand gestures. Small, intentional moments are what truly matter:

  • Finding Joy: This can come from listening to a familiar song, spending quiet time together, or simply sharing a laugh.

  • A Sense of Purpose: Meaning can be found in completing a simple, everyday task or being actively included in household activities.

  • Shared Connection: Simple, daily steps—like going for a short walk, working on a puzzle together, or just sitting side-by-side—can dramatically lift a loved one's mood and strengthen your bond.

This perspective shifts how we view the caregiving role. It's not just about helping someone "get through the day," but about helping them still feel like themselves. When we focus on supporting their identity, offering them small choices, and emphasizing what they can do, we protect their dignity and independence.

A Gift for the Caregiver, Too

Shifting your focus to these quiet, meaningful moments of joy, connection, and calm can also change things for you. It helps caregiving feel less like an overwhelming checklist of responsibilities, and more like a gentle, shared life experience.

This week, try to focus on just one small area of well-being:

  • 🎵 Play their favorite music.

  • ☕ Sit down and spend intentional, uninterrupted time together.

  • 🧩 Encourage a simple activity they genuinely enjoy.

  • 🎉 Celebrate a small win!
